Especially through the 2020-2021 school year, demand for school nurses has never been higher and more critical. Yet, school nursing is often less stressful than a hospital setting and includes more dependable hours based on school calendars and operation. As a school nurse, you’re the go-to when it comes to student wellbeing and care. Many school nurses support students with special needs, requiring specialized talents that encourage academic achievement alongside general health. You’ll be expected to provide routine preventative and diagnostic services, assist with the identification of physical or mental health problems before they manifest further, and make referrals to health facilities in the event more serious conditions emerge or require interventions in partnership with other school staff. School nurses are also on the front lines of everything from identifying bullying circumstances to administering basic medications approved for specific students. You’re an important part of a school-aged child’s life, advocating for good health practices and setting a healthy life in motion from the start.
Requirements for Getting a School Nurse Job
Many school districts require a nurse to have a four-year bachelor’s degree in nursing and be a registered nurse to meet their school healthcare standards. Some schools hire LPNs, but many require the RN certificate. A candidate must also have experience in a clinic or similar healthcare location. Other healthcare experiences may bolster your resume and prove attractive to school districts during your interview, but in general it’s important to be aware you must work well with children and be a strong voice for parents. Your Spindle Career Concierge will prepare you with coaching and expectations heading into it.
