Job Description

Position: Substitute Sign Language Interpreter (SLI)
Pay: $34-38/hr
Type: On Call, 1099 contract

Responsibilities: 

  • Facilitating Communication: The primary responsibility is to interpret spoken language into American Sign Language (ASL) or other sign languages and vice versa for students, teachers, and other school staff.

  • Monitoring Student Needs: While remote, the interpreter must still be aware of the student's learning style, comprehension level, and emotional needs. They may need to adjust their pace or approach based on the student's understanding or needs in real-time.

  • Collaborating with Teachers and Staff: This might include attending meetings with teachers to review lesson plans, provide feedback, or prepare for specific events (like field trips or special assemblies).

  • Technology Management: Since the interpreter is remote, they must be proficient in using the necessary technology platforms (video conferencing, remote interpreting software, etc.) to provide clear and effective communication. 

  • Supporting Individualized Education Plans (IEPs): If the student has an IEP or a 504 plan, the interpreter ensures that they are meeting the specific communication accommodations outlined in the student’s plan.

  • Documentation: Occasionally, the interpreter might be asked to keep logs or notes on specific sessions, noting the effectiveness of communication, challenges faced, and any additional support the student might need.
